How Do I Know If I Have Sleep Apnoea?
That is a good question and one we get asked a lot. Sleep apnoea sometimes called Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, is a common condition but awareness of sleep apnoea and its symptoms is still quite low in the UK, and it is estimated 85% of sufferers remain undiagnosed, and therefore untreated.
Symptoms of sleep apnoea mostly happen when you're asleep, with some causing other symptoms that can affect your daily quality of life. Sometimes you don't know you are having symptoms as you are asleep, and it's your partner who will notice it!
Snoring is often associated with sleep apnoea, and some people snore loudly but do not have any of the other things associated with it – you can snore loudly but do not stop breathing at all during sleep. The only way to find out for sure if you have sleep apnoea is to undertake a sleep study either in a sleep study centre or by using one of the at-home tests that are available in the UK.
If you have any of the following symptoms, you will benefit from a sleep study:
- Your breathing temporality stops and then suddenly starts again
- You make gasping, snorting, or choking noises while sleeping
- You wake up a lot through the night
- You snore loudly and often
- Feeling very tired or drowsy
- Finding it hard to concentrate, at work, or when driving
- Waking up with a headache
- Not feeling refreshed after a night’s sleep
- Poor memory function
- Irritability or anxiety
